Q:   What are some signs that a chimney fire has occurred?
A:    1.  “Puffy” creosote, with rainbow, colored streaks, that have expanded beyond the creosote’s normal form. 
2.    Warped metal of the damper, metal smoke chamber connector pipe or factory built chimney.
3.    Cracked or collapsed flue tiles, or tiles with large chunks missing.
4.    Discolored and disoriented rain cap.
5.    Creosote flakes and pieces found on the roof or ground.

Q:   How often should I have my chimney cleaned and inspected?
A:    Cleaning and inspection should be conducted annually at a minimum.  This service should be provided by a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep.  These service technicians are required to attend continuing education classes and testing to complete their certifications. 

Q:   What does the certified chimney sweep look for when inspecting my masonry chimney? 
A:    The Sweep will inspect for interior and exterior physical deterioration of the mortar, brick, crown, flue tiles and chimney cap.Water penetration and freeze/thaw climates can accelerate the deterioration of all of these areas and create potential safety hazards.  The sweep will also inspect the interior of the fireplace or solid fuel burning appliance to ensure bricks, dampers, machined seams and gaskets are in good working order and there is no warped metal parts.
